Avoid storm water drains - Stayin' Strong feature
Playing in storm water drains during severe storms and floods is very dangerous. In fact, its so risky that you could lose your life.
“In the period November 2008 to April 2009 more than 10 Queenslanders lost their lives in flood waters,” Michael Peach, Emergency Management Queensland.
Michael urges people, especially children, to stay away from drains and wading in knee-deep water and recommends other safety tips:
-
Teach your jarjums (children) about the dangers of flood waters, storm drains and tunnels;
-
Don’t allow children to play in or near rising flood waters;
-
If you have to walk through flooded waters wear strong shoes (leave the thongs at home!);
-
Be wary of hidden dangers e.g. live power lines, snakes, rats, spiders or sharp objects hidden in the water;
-
Use a stick to check the depth and current of the water; and
-
Be prepared by making sure your home and family have an evacuation plan.
If you or your family need to be rescued or have suffered flood damage call SES on 132 500
